How to use this Christmas gift list

Write one person per row. Use the Gift idea(s) column for two or three options so you have a backup if something is sold out. Fill in Budget before you shop and Spent after you buy, then tick Bought, Wrapped and Given as each gift moves along. Add the totals at the bottom when you are done, or at any point when you want a quick check.

The sheet has 16 rows. If you buy for more people, print a second copy or use one sheet per family group (your side, their side, friends, work).

A simple holiday shopping timeline

  • Early November: write the full list of names and a rough amount per person.
  • Mid-November: collect wish lists and sizes; order anything that has to ship from far away or be personalized.
  • Late November: buy the bulk of the gifts and mark each one as bought.
  • Early December: check retailer and carrier holiday shipping deadlines for anything still on order, and start wrapping.
  • Mid-December: fill gaps, buy stocking stuffers and set aside gifts for teachers, neighbors or hosts.
  • Final week: wrap the last gifts, label them, and check the Given column on the day.

Tips that keep gift shopping manageable

  • Write the amount you plan to spend before you see what is in the shops. It is easier to stick to a number you chose calmly.
  • Keep receipts or order confirmations in one envelope or email folder in case you need to return or exchange something.
  • Use the blank rows for gift exchanges at work or school. If your group is drawing names, hand out our Secret Santa questionnaire first.
  • Add a row called Wrapping and postage so those costs show up in your total.
  • Sending cards too? Track them on the Christmas card list, and plan the meal with the Christmas dinner planner.
  • Keep this year's sheet. Next year it is a handy record of what each person already received.
